What garden tools should you buy to maintain a healthy lawn?
This is a commonly asked question by new homeowners. Many of which have invested in the purchase of their home and need only the essential garden tools to get started in their yard and garden. You may however, love yard work and would like to go ahead and purchase most of the items you will need so that you will have them on hand when you need them. I would also recommend a garden tool organizer to store and organize your tools, or a garden tool rack.
What do you have in your yard that will need maintenance? You will have a grass lawn that will need caring for, maybe some shrubs, bushes, or trees in the landscape, or maybe some deck or patio plants.

Lawn mower- The lawn mower is the ultimate garden tool, or piece of equipment that you will need. It will most likely be the most expensive item that you need to maintain your lawn. It would be to your advantage to purchase an good quality mower that will last you many years. There are an endless types and companies that sell mowers. Be sure to check them out and get the one that is best for your lawn and your pocketbook.
Weed-eater- A weed-eater is needed to cut grass and weeds that grow up along fences and around trees and side of your house. The look of your yard will drastically depend on if you use a weed-eater or not. It puts a finishing touch on the look of your yard. They can be either gas or electric powered. Gas weed-eaters are handy since they don’t have a long cord dragging around with you. Some people would rather have an electric one and not have to deal with gas engines.
Edger- If you have a driveway or sidewalk on your property that has grass growing up along the edge, you will need to invest in some type of edge. Edgers cut the grass off at the concrete and makes a nice crisp cut that makes the appearance of your lawn attractive. Edgers can be manual, where you push it along the edges of the concrete, or it may be an electric edger.
Blower- A blower is not an essential item but will save you time if you need to get the newly cut grass off of concrete areas or patios.
Fertilizer Spreader- This is a good item to have on hand. If you have a lawn you will need to apply fertilizer at least 3 times a year, if not more. There are many on the market and all of them will do the job. I would suggest getting one that has a rotating setting where you can control how much fertilizer comes through at a time.
Sprinkler- If you are not lucky enough to have an irrigation system in your yard, as many of us don’t, you will need to purchase at least one or more sprinklers. One good all purpose sprinkler is necessary. I would also suggest getting both a oscillating one and a smaller ring sprinkler for smaller area that might not be reached by the larger sprinkler.
Garden Hose- A good garden hose is a must for any home owner. Be sure you get a length that will allow you to reach all areas of your yard. You might need a hose for both your front and back yard, instead of just one long one. Be sure to get a good quality nozzle for your hose. There are many that can adjust to different pressures.
