Wooden Park Bench

A wooden park bench made of wood and cast iron is a very popular and typical type of park bench. The most common woods used on these are, Cedar, Ipe`, and Pau Lope.' Cedar is a great wood for outdoor use. It is used for many types of gazebos, potting benches, trellises and other kinds of outdoor furniture. It can be stained or varnished, unless you like the rustic look. Here are a couple of woods that are relatively unknown to the public. Ipe` is a South American hardwood, that is said to be three times stronger than teak wood and much heavier.

It has a class A fire rating and comes with a rose oil finish. Pau Lope` is also  a South American wood that is a dark brown color, but weathers to a silver gray.  The wood is usually made into 1 x 2 1/2 inch planks with a cast iron or tubular stainless steel frame. The price on these types may run more than the cedar. You can order online or buy a lesser expensive park bench at your local home and garden store.

Mesh Park Bench

A Mesh park bench has minimal maintenance and has maximum durability. Most have a powder coated finish which differs greatly from the other types of finishes available. These benches are great because it allows water to flow freely through the mess so that there will be no water build-up throughout the winter or rainy seasons. Mesh-metal, or wood combos can be found at local stores for less than $100.00.

Plastic or Recycled Plastic Benches

Plastic or recycled plastic benches are yet another type of park bench. These benches come in different colors. The actual color is molded into the plastic which eliminates any painting or staining through the years. This non-porous surface is not affected by water in any form, therefore, no rotting or rusting is possible. Plastic park benches are great because they will never rot or splinter. They are free standing but you can purchase hardware to permanently anchor them down. Recycled Park benches weigh around 114 pounds and costs in the mid $200 range.

Steel or Metal Coated Park Bench

Another type of park bench is the steel or metal-coated park bench. It comes fully welded and is known for its classic look and durability. It is made of heavy duty steel and yet keeps its comfortable contours. It usually has a thermally bonded, powder coating making it very smooth. They come in multiple colors so you are to find a color that matches your garden decor. These benches weigh around 275 pounds an range in the $1000.00 price range.

Precast Concrete Park Bench

Also available is a Precast concrete park bench. These are usually backless benches made of Portland Cement. Some are made in combination with other materials such as, reinforced aggregate. The aggregate can be purchased with several different finishes. These benches are around 72" long and 24 " high. Expect to pay around $500 to $600 for this type.
